Józef Pius Dziekoński

Józef Pius Dziekoński (born May 5, 1844 in Płock , † February 4, 1927 in Warsaw ) was a Polish architect, monument conservator and university professor. He designed mainly sacred buildings and represented the style of historicism . He is considered the pioneer of the Vistula-Baltic Sea style (Polish: Styl wiślano-bałtycki ).

Life

Born in Płock, he attended the School of Fine Arts in Warsaw, which he graduated in 1866. He then studied at the Art Academy in St. Petersburg , where he obtained the diploma of an architect III in 1871. Class received. In 1863 he had participated in the January Uprising .

The first work was done in collaboration with the architects E. Lilpop and E. Cichocki; later he designed solely around 50 churches in the Kingdom of Poland, mostly in Warsaw's environment, including the Florian Church in Warsaw-Praga , the Stanislaus Church in Warsaw Wola and the Charles Borromeo Church in Warsaw Powazki. His preferred architectural style for sacred buildings was the neo-Gothic.

From 1815 to 1817, Dziekoński was the first dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the Warsaw University of Technology and co-founder of the Society for the Protection of Historical Monuments (Polish: Towarzystwo Opieki nad Zabytkami Przeszłości ) and from 1893 on the Commission for the Study of Art History in Poland (Polish: Komisja do Badania Historii Sztuki w Polsce ).

Dziekoński's students included Franciszek Lilpop , Zdzisław Mączeński, and Ludwik Panczakiewicz. He was a holder of the Polonia Restituta Order and the Order of Gregorius . In 1919 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Politechnika in Lemberg .
