József Halzl (born December 19, 1933 in Győr , Hungary ) is a Hungarian mechanical engineer, co-founder of the Hungarian Democratic Forum (MDF) and honorary chairman of the Rákóczi Association .

Life

On the paternal line, Halzl comes from Szenc ( Senec , today in Slovakia ), on the maternal line from Sopronkeresztúr (today: Deutschkreutz ) in Burgenland ( Austria ).

He attended schools in Ács , Pannonhalma , Hatvan and finally Budapest . There he passed his Abitur at the II Rákóczi Ferenc High School. He finished his mechanical engineering studies in 1957 as a graduate engineer at the Technical University in Budapest, where he also received his doctorate.

Before the political system change in Hungary in 1989, József Halzl worked as a specialist engineer at the Institute for Energy Research (EGI), where he dealt with thermal power plants. Between 1991 and 1994 he was General Director of Hungary's largest company, the Hungarian Electricity Company ( Magyar Villamos Művek ).

At the time of political change he joined the Hungarian Democratic Forum (MDF) and served as its party chairman for a time. After the fall of the Wall he published his diary from the time of the Hungarian uprising in 1956. He documented events from his perspective as a student at the Technical University.

Between 1990 and 2018 he was chairman of the Rákóczi Association; In 2018 he was elected honorary chairman.

In addition to his work in the Rákóczi Association, he dealt with the organization of the youth community of the Catholic community in the Városmajor neighborhood in Budapest, at the same time he was head of the "Héra Foundation" (Héra Alapitvány), which promotes the energy supply of people in precarious situations.

József Halzl is married, has a daughter and is based in Budapest's 2nd district .
