Jörg Faßbinder , also Jörg WE Faßbinder and Jörg Fassbinder (* 1954 in Heidelberg ), is a German geophysicist and head of the geophysical prospecting department at the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation . For a large part of his international research, Faßbinder presented the initial descriptions.

Life

Faßbinder studied geophysics at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (LMU). He obtained his diploma in 1985 for the subject: construction of an apparatus for determining the time dependence of the initial magnetic susceptibility and measurement of titanium magnetites . In 1992 he received his doctorate and in 2009 he received his habilitation in geophysics . After an intensive period for the monument protection authorities in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, Faßbinder has been working at the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation since March 1986, where he is head of the geophysical prospecting department. Until his retirement in 2006, he worked closely with the geophysicist Helmut Becker , who headed the Archaeological Prospection and Aerial Archeology Department. The two further developed the geophysical methods and devices. For example, they worked on a project for Troy with an improved cesium magnetometer that was 100 times more sensitive (0.01 nanotesla) of conventional commercial devices.

Faßbinder has been a lecturer at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich since May 1998 in the Department of Geosciences and Environmental Sciences in the field of archaeometry . The geophysicist works as a leader and contributor in national and international prospecting projects in cooperation with various institutions. Since 1996 he has been working for the Eurasia Department and Orient Department of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) in South Siberia , Kazakhstan , Egypt , Ethiopia , Syria , Yemen , Iraq and Iran, among others . Another important cooperation has linked him with the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg since 2006 . It is about researching prehistoric settlements. He also works for the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Bavaria . Faßbinder is a member of the ArchaeoBioCenter of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich.

Memberships

Faßbinder is a member of a number of international societies such as the International Society for Archaeological Prospection (ISAP) and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) as well as a founding member of the Society for Scientific Archeology and Archaeometry (GNAA).
