Jörg Herz (also Jörg / Georg, Herz / Hertz ; * 1492 in Nuremberg ; † October 1, 1554 ibid) was a mint master whose portrait painted by Georg Pencz has survived.

Life

Jörg Herz was the son of Sebald Herz and Cecilia / Cäcilia Lochhauser, daughter of the Nuremberg goldsmith Hans Lochhauser. Jörg Herz was married at least three times, his wives were Sybilla Götz († January 17, 1536), Barbara Brenner († August 13, 1547) and Anna Gering († 1557). His children, known to us today, are Sebald (like his grandfather's name) and Barbara Herz, who was married to the Nuremberg goldsmith Wolf Möringer.

Jörg Herz was a goldsmith / jeweler and a so-called mint master / coin maker / coin wardein of Nuremberg. In 1524 he represented the city of Nuremberg on the coin regulation day in Esslingen . From 1537, as mint master of the city of Nuremberg, he was responsible for checking the fineness of the gold. He was paid by the Nuremberg Council on September 15, 1537 to make coins. Mention is also made of a trip he undertook to Joachimsthal on behalf of the city of Nuremberg. A record from 1532 has been preserved from his private life, which identifies him as the owner of a “house with a courtyard in the Alte Ledergasse” (Tucherstraße 38). In 1559/1560 the children of Jörg Herz sold the house for 1650 Florin to their stepfather Hans Schöning, who after Jörg Herzen's death had married his third wife Anna Gering.

Portrait and epitaph of Jörg Herz

The portrait of Jörg Herz is exhibited in the State Art Gallery in Karlsruhe . It was painted by the Nuremberg painter Georg Pencz , who was a student of Albrecht Dürer . The portrait shows Jörg Herz in 1545 when he was 53 years old. This information can be read on a small painted piece of paper in the upper left corner of the picture. The family coat of arms of the heart is also passed on through this portrait; it can be seen in small form on the finger ring and in full form on the gold scales in the background. The coat of arms is also on the epitaph of Jörg Herz. Originally he was buried in the St. Johannis cemetery on grave place 75. Today the epitaph is in the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg with the inventory number Neg. GNM Gd. 92. The epitaph of his second and third wife is also preserved there.
