from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jörg Keller (born October 29, 1938 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German petrologist , mineralogist , geochemist and volcanologist .

Life

Jörg Keller studied at the University of Freiburg , where he received his doctorate in 1966 (for which he received the University's Gödecke Research Prize) and qualified as a professor in 1972. The subject of his dissertation was the geology of the island of Salina . He became a professor in Freiburg and was Vice Rector for Research from 1983 to 1987.

He is particularly concerned with volcanism in the Mediterranean (including Sicily and Aeolian Islands such as Stromboli and Lipari , effects of the Santorin eruption, Turkey), on the Upper Rhine Rift , Indonesia ( Merapi (Java) ) and carbonatite volcanism, especially the Ol Doinyo Lengai in Tanzania, the only active volcano with carbonatite lava . He took part in expeditions of the research vessel Meteor in the Mediterranean. He made a geological map of the island of Salina (Catania 1970) and Vulcano (Catania 1972).

In 1987 he received the University Medal from the University of Freiburg.

In 1993 he published the translation of Maurice Krafft Vulkane - Feuer der Erde .

He is co-editor of Mineralogy and Petrology ( 1980-2000 ), Acta Vulcanologica (1994-2004), Bulletin of Volcanology ( 1975-1985 ) and the Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research (since 2001).

He is the brother of the medievalist Hagen Keller .
