Jørn Riel

Jørn Riel (born July 23, 1931 in Odense ) is a Danish writer .

Life

The trained radio operator and navigator Riel took part in an expedition to northeast Greenland from 1951 to 1953 to carry out meteorological studies. He spent a total of sixteen years in Greenland. In the 1960s he toured the West Indies , North Africa and Southeast Asia . He worked for the United Nations in Jordan and Syria . Today he lives alternately in Scandinavia and Malaysia .

Most of Riel's short stories and novels are set in the Arctic . While he was wintering with an Inuk in northeast Greenland in 1951 , he began to write and tell stories to pass the time. His stories are in the Scandinavian tradition of oral legends . They are based on the stories of the Scandinavian hunters in northeast Greenland, who Riel got to know before their bases were closed in the 1950s. Riel has written over 40 books that have been translated into numerous languages. In Denmark, his books had a total circulation of over a million.

Film adaptations

The novel Before the Morning was filmed by Marie-Hélène Cousineau and Madeline Ivalu under the title Le Jour avant le lendemain . The film was released in 2008.
