Jewish elementary school (Könen)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jewish elementary school in Könen , a district of Konz on the Moselle in the district of Trier-Saarburg in Rhineland-Palatinate , was an elementary school that was maintained by the Jewish community of Könen .

history

The school building, which was probably built around 1850, was located at the western exit of Reinigerstraße next to the synagogue . The building was demolished.

The Jewish school in Könen probably existed long before the school building was built. Lessons took place in private rooms before the new school was built. The Jewish children from Wasserliesch also attended the Jewish school in Könen. In 1849 there were a total of 22 school-age Jewish children in Wasserliesch and Könen, only two of whom attended Christian schools. This made the Jewish school in Könen the second largest in the Trier district after the Jewish school in Aach .

In 1853 the Jewish elementary school was converted into a religious school. From then on, the Jewish children attended the Christian school and received Jewish religious instruction from a religion teacher outside of regular school lessons.

In the following decades, the religion teacher was paid by the Jewish community of Könen and also exercised the function of cantor and schochet . Jewish religious instruction continued until the 1930s.
