The Jewish Community of Chalons-en-Champagne is located in the town of Chalons-en-Champagne in the Marne department in the French region of Grand Est .

history

There is evidence of a synagogue in Châlons-en-Champagne as early as 1367 , which was located on Rue de la Juiverie ( Judengasse ). During major renovations, traces of a medieval synagogue with remains of the Torah shrine were discovered in this district . A ritual bath ( mikveh ) was also excavated. 18 steps lead to a water basin that is fed with water from an underground channel.

The Jewish community of Châlons-en-Champagne belonged to the Consistoire Paris from 1808 to 1871 and then to the Consistoire Lille .

The Châlons-en-Champagne Jewish cemetery is on Rue Kellerman. Jewish soldiers of the First World War are also buried on it.
