Jewish cemetery (Ivančice)

The Jewish cemetery in Ivančice (German Eibenschütz or Eibenschitz ), a town in the Okres Brno-venkov district in the Czech Republic , was probably laid out at the beginning of the 16th century. The Jewish cemetery , located northwest of the city on Mřenková Street, has been a protected cultural monument since 2008 .
history
It is said that Jews have lived in Ivančice since the 10th century , making the place one of the oldest Jewish-inhabited places in Moravia . The Jewish community of Ivančice has been documented since the second half of the 15th century.
The cemetery was laid out in the 16th century at the latest. On an area of over one hectare there are about 1800 tombstones ( Mazewot ), the oldest legible tombstone is from 1552. In the cemetery there are tombstones from the Renaissance , Baroque and Classicism with noteworthy symbolism. At the entrance is the mourning hall from 1902 in the style of eclecticism .
