The Jewish cemetery Seulberg is a Jewish cemetery in Seulberg , a district of the community Friedrichsdorf in Hochtaunuskreis in Hesse . The cemetery is a protected cultural monument and is located about 200 meters outside the village in a secluded grove.

history

The Jewish cemetery in Seulberg was first mentioned in a document in 1580, but it existed before that time. It is one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in today's Hesse and served as a cemetery for the Jewish communities in Seulberg, Köppern , Rodheim , Holzhausen , Homburg and Oberursel as long as they did not have their own cemetery.

Seulberg belonged to the Landgraviate of Hessen-Homburg . Relations with the Homburg Jewish community were correspondingly close. The so-called Judenpfad led from Homburg to the shared cemetery. In 1690 the cemetery was expanded by two acres of land with funds from the Homburg Jewish community and thus became the cemetery for all Jews in the Homburg Landgraviate. At the end of the 17th century there were around ten Jewish families in Seulberg.

After the emancipation of Jews in 1816, conflicts arose in Seulberg when Jews asserted their right to free wood allocation from the community forest. The dispute escalated from 1837 in the so-called Seulberg Jewish riots. The Jewish community shrank due to emigration. After a Jewish cemetery was established in Homburg in 1865, burials were rarely held in Seulberg. The last funeral in Seulberg took place in 1924.

The Jewish cemetery in Seulberg was desecrated as part of the Reichspogromnacht . Today there are still 199 tombstones ( Mazewot ), most of which date from the 18th and 19th centuries.
