Jewish cemetery (Bassum)
The Bassum Jewish cemetery is a well-preserved Jewish cemetery in Bassum ( Diepholz district , Lower Saxony ). It is a protected cultural monument .
description
The cemetery is located south of the core area of Bassum, south of the southern bypass ( B 51 ) and east of the B 61 to Sulingen . The enclosed cemetery has a size of approximately 600 m². There are 28 tombstones for deceased Jews and 9 tombstones for "unknown Russian soldiers". The prisoners of war ( World War II ) from the former Soviet Union were buried in 9 collective graves. In 7 of the 9 tombstones for the collective graves the number of "Russians" is given: 6 or 7 - a total of 44. With two tombstones the inscription reads only "Unknown Soldiers Russians".
The cemetery is run by the Lower Saxony State Association of Jewish Communities . The city of Bassum is responsible for maintenance.

The cemetery was laid out before 1852. The oldest gravestone is dated to 1852, the youngest to 1942.
