The Freiburg im Breisgau Jewish Cemetery was established in 1870 at the corner of Elsässer Strasse and Rosbaumweg in Freiburg im Breisgau ( Baden-Württemberg ) and is still in use today. It is a protected cultural monument .

history

A burial place for the medieval Jewish community could not be proven in Freiburg. Perhaps a Jewish cemetery in the area was used, possibly in Breisach or Waldkirch .

For centuries since 1401, Jews were prohibited from settling in Freiburg, which was only lifted in 1806. The Jewish Community of Freiburg im Breisgau , legally constituted in 1863 , laid out its own cemetery on the corner of Elsässer Strasse and Rosbaumweg in 1870, with an area of 82.61 acres . Today there are about 900 tombstones ( Mazevot ). The temporary cemetery hall built in 1891 was replaced by a new building before 1914. This in turn was destroyed during the Nazi era in 1938. The cemetery hall that still exists today was built between 1949 and 1952. Its construction and financing by the city of Freiburg was the subject of a settlement reached in 1948, according to which the Israelite community waived its restitution claim and the city remained the owner of the area of the destroyed synagogue on Rempart. The cemetery, which has been in use since 1870, is still used for burials, although there is already a burial ground in the municipal cemetery in Freiburg-St. Georgen is available for the Jewish community.

Another special feature of this Jewish cemetery is that non-Jewish people can also be buried in a separate area. However, this is only possible for family members and / or for the deceased with special merits.

War memorial

In the Jewish cemetery there is a memorial for the many members of the Jewish community of Freiburg who died in the First World War .
