history

L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue was part of the Comtat Venaissin , which came under papal rule in 1348. In the 16th century the place belonged together with Carpentras , Avignon and Cavaillon to the four Kehillot , based on the four Jewish communities in the Holy Land in Jerusalem , Hebron , Safed and Tiberias . The Jews lived in separate neighborhoods called Carrière in this region . After only a little over 20 Jews lived in the village at the beginning of the 19th century, the synagogue was destroyed in 1856. The Jewish cemetery remained the sole property of the local Jewish community. It covers an area of 9,460 m² and contains around 40 tombstones that can be assigned to four families: Abram, Carcassonne, Crémieux and Créange. The last burial took place in 1939.
