The Neukalen Jewish Cemetery is a Jewish cemetery near the town of Neukalen in the Mecklenburg Lake District in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It is listed as a monument in Neukalen in the official list of monuments.

description

The cemetery is located in the “Warsower Tannen” forest 2 km northeast of the city. About 10 tombstones are still preserved on it. Jewish cemeteries were designated as burial places on the official maps and were signed with an L instead of a †. Most of the time, they were created further outside the cities or municipalities, mainly in the barn districts or similar remote places, such as here in the forest, far outside the city.

history

A Jewish cemetery was established around 1690. At that time, the city's Jewish community was able to purchase a piece of arable land, plant it with fir trees and turn it into a burial place. In 1829 the cemetery was expanded. When the Jewish community was dissolved in 1899, the cemetery was sold to the city. The cemetery was desecrated during the Nazi era. After 1945 it was not restored.

Over time, the tombstones were removed and repurposed until repairs began in 1988. The approximately ten preserved tombstones were then put back up.
