The Jewish cemetery near Schrapfendorf was a medieval Jewish cemetery in the Schnellmannshausen district of Treffurt in the Wartburg district in Thuringia .

The Schrapfendorfer Friedhof is still listed in the historical land maps of the community as "Judengottesacker". Nothing remained of the graves. The cemetery itself is located on a gently sloping meadow on the northern edge of the forest, close to a stream.

history

Today's Vierseithof Schrapfendorf is located on the Bundesstraße 250. The name is reminiscent of a medieval village settlement at the entrance to the Märtal (also called Mertelstal). This deserted Schrapfendorf is only about 400 meters away from the farm between Schnellmannshausen and its Volteroda district , and 400 meters southwest of the “Hilvershausen” settlement that has also become deserted. The hamlet “Hattengehau”, which still exists today, is located near Schrapfendorf. This high density of settlements in the valley is not unusual in the neighboring Hainich area . As a result of the founding of the first cities ( Creuzburg and Treffurt ), some places began to move away as early as the 13th century.

The former cemetery is located on an old road that came from Creuzburg into the Märtal. At a “Steinstock” trail marker, this road branched off from the main path to the west, in order to enable the descent into the Rambacher Valley at a favorable point on the steep slope between the present-day forest locations “Graburg” and “Dreiherrenstein”. From there you got to Weißenborn, to the collegiate monastery St. Bonifatius in Großburschla or by the shortest route to the neighboring town of Wanfried .

The place is protected as a ground monument.
