history

As early as 1686, the Barchfeld Jewish community was able to create a Jewish cemetery. At that time, Landgravine Hedwig Sophie von Hessen gave her protective Jews a piece of land for a burial place. It was located at the "Fischertor" near the village. The cemetery was expanded for the first time in 1714, and in 1741 it was fenced. In 1786 the cemetery was expanded once more by a "sixteenth of an acre", a third time in 1803. In the course of the enlargements, the annual hereditary interest was increased.

Since 1843, a new plot of land was used as a burial area, the last expansion took place in 1898. During the Nazi era , many of the gravestones, especially the valuable ones from 1885 to 1936, were stolen by individual Barchfeld citizens and used for personal purposes, e.g. B. for foundations for new houses. As a result, about two thirds of the tombstones disappeared. Only the tombstone of Elora Strauss (1873–1936) remained from the 20th century.

The remaining tombstones were erected again after 1945. The Jewish state community in Thuringia sold part of the old cemetery grounds to an adjacent neighbor.
