Barchfeld Jewish community

Jews had lived in Barchfeld since the 16th century, including those expelled from the Würzburg monastery . In 1700 there were six families in the Jewish religious community , in 1720 the community had 76 people, and in 1825 32 households with 165 people. In 1887 the number of Jewish citizens in Barchfeld peaked at 240. In 1923 there were 85 and in 1932/33 there were still 63 members of the Jewish religious community.

synagogue

A synagogue was built in Barchfeld as early as the 18th century , as well as a mikveh , a Jewish cemetery and a Jewish school before 1836 . In 1841/42 a new school building was erected, the location of which is no longer known today.

In 1844/45 a new synagogue was built and it was inaugurated on September 19, 1845. In 1879 a fire severely damaged the synagogue, so that it had to be extensively renovated by August 20, 1880. The building served the Jews from Barchfeld and the surrounding area (including Breitungen / Werra , Bad Liebenstein , Floh-Seligenthal , Brotterode and, at times, Schmalkalden ) as a community synagogue.

On the night of November 9, 1938 , the interior of the synagogue was removed and the building demolished. The vacated property remained undeveloped after 1945.
