Jewish cemetery (Wesel, Esplanade)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Esplanade Jewish cemetery is located in the district town of Wesel in North Rhine-Westphalia . As a Jewish cemetery , it is an architectural monument . Around 30 tombstones have been at least partially preserved there.

location

The cemetery is located in the west of Wesel city center and at the same time on the north-western edge of the citadel district . It is located in a block between Norbertstraße, Esplanade and Südring. The cemetery is framed by built-up private land and is surrounded by a wall and hedges. It is not accessible and only partially visible from the esplanade. There is also a memorial stone with an information board.

history

A tombstone from 1665 was only rediscovered during restoration work in 2008, thus proving that the cemetery on the Esplanade already existed at that time. The gravestone in question commemorates Rabbi David Jacobs, who was buried there and who had lived in Wesel since at least 1623 and who became the first rural Jewry rabbi in the historic Duchy of Cleves in 1650 . In 1880 a new Jewish cemetery was set up in Wesel with the Am Ostglacis cemetery. The cemetery on the Esplanade was last occupied in 1891.

The inscriptions that have been preserved indicate that the tombstones were primarily inscribed in Hebrew with a high level of language. However, over 90 percent of the tombstones that once existed have been destroyed. Efforts have been made to restore tombstones since 1988. Through several successful restorations of stones in 2008, the number of at least partially existing gravestones grew to over 30.
