Gravestones in the cemetery (2016)

The Jewish cemetery Am Ostglacis is located in the district town of Wesel in North Rhine-Westphalia . As a Jewish cemetery , it is an architectural monument . 173 tombstones have been preserved in the cemetery.

location

The cemetery is located in the northeast of Wesel city center, just outside the ring road that surrounds the city center. It is located on the edge of the Ostglacis forest on the street named after it, Am Ostglacis . The property of the New Apostolic Church in Wesel is directly adjacent.

history

The cemetery was set up as the city's second Jewish cemetery in the context of the expansion of the Wesel Jewish community . In 1880 the parish acquired the property and in 1881 the cemetery began to be occupied. The cemetery was occupied between 1881 and 1957 and again in 1983. During the Nazi era , the cemetery was badly devastated, which is why only some of the older tombstones have survived.

Regarding the language used on the tombstones, the picture is mixed between German, Hebrew and bilingual inscriptions. While gravestones in Hebrew sometimes have longer inscriptions, the purely German-language gravestones are often reduced to brief information about the deceased. Overall, the cemetery has a largely modest design, both in terms of the inscriptions and the external shape of the tombstones, which is also the case with the graves of members of wealthy families.
