The Jewish cemetery Wetter is a Jewish cemetery approx. 2 km southwest of the city of Wetter in the Marburg-Biedenkopf district in Hesse . The cemetery is located directly on the boundary of Sterzhausen on the eastern edge of the Wollenberg on the south side of the so-called Judenküppel and covers 20.80 ares .

history

The Jewish cemetery Wetter is mentioned for the first time on Wetter's cadastral map from 1752. The Jewish families from Wetter, Goßfelden , Caldern and Sterzhausen buried their dead here. Between 1915 and 1922 the deceased Jews from Oberasphe were also buried until a new cemetery could be opened there. The cemetery has been surrounded by a fence since 1863.

During the Nazi era , numerous gravestones were destroyed or removed from the cemetery. Some of the tombstones were rediscovered after the war and returned to the cemetery. 56 tombstones and tombstone fragments have been preserved, the oldest from 1856.

The cemetery was desecrated several times after 1945 . In April 1989, 22 tombstones were damaged or knocked over and five were smeared with National Socialist symbols. Serious desecration also took place in November 2008.
