The Old Jewish Cemetery Marburg is a cemetery in the district town of Marburg in the central Hessian district of Marburg-Biedenkopf in Hesse . It is listed as a cultural monument .

The 5017 m² Jewish cemetery is surrounded by the streets An den Siechengärten / Spiegelslustweg / Alter Kirchhainer Weg. There are over 300 tombstones in the cemetery .

history

The cemetery was probably laid out at the beginning of the 18th century. The oldest tombs that are preserved in the cemetery date from the period from 1712 to 1801/1802. In 1883 the city sold the property to the growing Jewish community . The cemetery was also occupied after 1945, including by concentration camp survivors ( DPs ) who died in the Marburg area between 1947 and 1949.

In the 1980s, the Jewish community in Marburg was re-established. Since then the cemetery has been the burial place of the Jewish community again.

Medieval Jewish cemetery

There was a first Jewish cemetery in Marburg in the Middle Ages . He was referred to as "der juden kirchob" (1375, 1441, 1442) or as "juddenkirchoff" (1455–1492). The cemetery was in front of the suburb of Weidenhausen at the Mannersieche (cf. today's street name "An den Siechengärten"), roughly where today's Jewish cemetery is. The cemetery was probably no longer used as early as 1375, but was converted into a garden and later into arable land . No burials can be found in the cemetery from the 14th to the 19th century; the area was used for agriculture .

In the area of this medieval Jewish cemetery, the old Jewish cemetery was probably created at the beginning of the 18th century.

New Jewish cemetery

Due to the lack of space in the old Jewish cemetery, a new Jewish cemetery has now been created. It is located next to the municipal cemetery on Rotenberg. The old Jewish cemetery is no longer occupied.
