Jürgen "Eddy" Franke (born June 7, 1953 in Minden ) is a former German handball player and coach. The 1.91 m tall runner played for TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen and TBV Lemgo in the Bundesliga .

Career

Franke began playing handball at TuS Eintracht Minden and moved in 1975 from the upper league to the regional division TuS Minderheide , which he left in December and joined the Bundesliga reserve from TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen , which played in the association league. Under coach Horst Bredemeier , he was promoted to the league in 1977. When Bredemeier took over the position of the dismissed Vinko Dekaris in the Bundesliga team in April 1979 , he also helped Franke to make this leap. On May 12, 1979, he made his debut in the away game at TSV Jahn Gensungen in the Bundesliga and was instrumental in winning the DHB Cup a little later with four goals in the semifinals against TuSpo Nürnberg and three goals in the final against THW Kiel . In addition, he was promoted to the regional league with the second team. After defeating VfL Gummersbach in February 1980, national coach Vlado Stenzel said of Franke:

“I don't regret having been to Minden this evening. I not only saw my national players [...] but also a man who should have been discovered eight years ago - Jürgen Franke! [...] "

- Vlado Stenzel : In: Mindener Tageblatt .

After he was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga with Dankersen in 1981 , he was able to celebrate direct promotion in the following season and by moving to TBV Lemgo repeated this success a year later. With Lemgo, he successfully prevented relegation for six years in a row and originally wanted to end his career in 1989. The national league team SuS Veltheim from Franke's place of residence Porta Westfalica persuaded him to make a four-month comeback. When TSV GWD Minden was in acute danger of relegation in the 2nd Bundesliga at the end of the 1989/90 season, he also helped out here until the end of the season and was able to secure relegation. At the beginning of the new season, the TBV Lemgo got line-up problems due to some injuries and Franke helped out again. In November 1991 he then joined the regional division TuS Spenge and stayed until the summer of 1994. Six months later he was reactivated again. This time from Lower Saxony's association league club TSV Eintracht Exten, with whom he was able to celebrate promotion to the league in 1996. Franke took over the position of player- coach for the new season , but resigned in December.

In 2001 he became assistant trainer at TBV Lemgo and held this position for twelve years. At the end of the 2001/02 season he was even head coach for a short time after Zbigniew Tłuczyński was dismissed . During his time as assistant coach, he was able to celebrate a German championship title, two DHB Cup victories and two European Cup victories with the club.
