Life

He grew up in Aukrug -Bünzen as the son of a master distiller . The tight economic situation in the parental home, in which six children had to be looked after, made it necessary for Jürgen Friedrich Ahrens to make a living as a shepherd boy. In Bad Segeberg he attended the teachers' seminar after school and from 1857 worked as a teacher in Holstein , including in Itzehoe and Kiel . From 1873 he was the full-time director of the trade school in Kiel.

For a long time he was a member of the board of the German Trade Teachers Association. In addition to his poems, Ahrens wrote books for advanced training and trade schools, wrote about the use of machines in companies, about teacher training , teaching students to work independently, handicrafts, hiking trips and about Schleswig-Holstein's history.

By 1903, Ahrens had built up the trade school in his 30 years as director in such a way that the number of teachers increased from 9 to 80, the classes from 10 to 88 and the number of students from 273 to 2336. He retired in the fall of the same year.
