Jürgen Leirich

Jürgen Leirich (born December 14, 1938 in Halle an der Saale ; † May 19,  2012 there ) was a German sports scientist , university professor and gymnastics official .

Life

Leirich studied sports and German in Halle and was an active gymnast in the 1950s at the top of the German Democratic Republic . He occasionally did rowing and pole vaulting. From 1957 he was a research assistant at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg , and in 1969 he completed his doctoral thesis “Investigations into ideas of movement and their relevance for optimizing motor learning in apparatus gymnastics”. In his habilitation thesis, which Leirich also presented in Halle in 1979, he dealt with the subject of apparatus gymnastics: "Investigations into the technique and training methodology of the support jumps taking into account the long-term development of athletic performance: a contribution to the objectification of technology and the methodology of performance diagnostics in apparatus gymnastics" .

At the beginning of the 1970s he was visiting professor at the College of Physical Education at the University of Baghdad and in the 1980s in Algeria at the Instuit for Physical Education and Sport in Algiers . In 1988 Leirich was appointed associate professor at the University of Halle-Wittenberg, after the end of the GDR he was head of the Institute for Sports Science at the University of Halle-Wittenberg in 1990 and 1991 and dean of the educational science department until 1993. In 1993 he took up a professorship for sports motor skills in Halle and was in charge of the music, sports and speech science department until 1998.

The focus of his research was on apparatus gymnastics: Leirich was co-author of the book series "Turnen an Geräte", from 1991 to 1995 he headed the research project "Structure, technology and terminology of apparatus gymnastics" and from 1997 to 2002 the project "Terminology apparatus gymnastics".

As a functionary, Leirich was founding president of the State Gymnastics Association of Saxony-Anhalt from 1990 and remained chairman until 1996, and he was also a member of the main committee of the German Gymnastics Federation . As an award for his work in favor of gymnastics, Leirich was awarded the Walter Kolb plaque.

From 1990 to 1992 Leirich was chairman of the Friends of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn. In 2004 he became deputy chairman of the Friedrich Ludwig Jahn Society and held this office until his death.
