Jürgen Petersen (born April 2, 1909 in Wiesbaden , † January 10, 1991 in Cologne ) was a German journalist .

Life

Petersen came from a Lübeck rectory. He studied German, history and theology and received his doctorate in 1934. Petersen then worked as a journalist in Darmstadt , became editor of the Berliner Tageblatt and in 1939 came to the feature section of the Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (DAZ) under Paul Fechter . At the newly founded newspaper Das Reich , which was to serve as a high-quality figurehead of the regime, Petersen was initially Karl Korn's deputy in the cultural section and, after his dismissal in October 1940, took over the management of the section.

In his numerous articles, Petersen wrote mainly about the current theater and film screenings, but also considerations about an "unspirituality" of youth or Jacob Burckhardt as well as articles about the Ossiach Abbey and Albert Speer and his buildings. While he tried to be objective and objective in these articles, his review of the film The Rothschilds did not remain free from the prevailing anti-Semitism , although the reviews of the Frankfurter Zeitung and DAZ showed that it was possible to dispense with stereotyping. Petersen later presented the bold style of his article as "Escape to the front", with which he wanted to indicate a distancing. As with Korn, his time as head of the feature section was short-lived, on December 31, 1941 he was called up. Petersen suspected that this was due to his rejection of an essay by Franz Six on Immanuel Kant , whereupon Six threatened him with revenge in a telephone conversation. During his time in the Wehrmacht , he wrote PK reports, most of which appeared in the DAZ.

From 1946 worked at the Northwest German Broadcasting Corporation until 1955 when he went to the Hessian Broadcasting Corporation as head of the “Cultural Word” department . From 1962 until his retirement in 1974 he was director of the cultural program of Deutschlandfunk .
