Jürgen Zimmer

Jürgen Zimmer (born February 19, 1938 in Bielefeld ; † August 21, 2019 in Chiang Mai , Thailand ) was a German educational scientist and journalist.

Jürgen Zimmer passed the Abitur at the Schloss Salem School . With a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation , he studied psychology, education and law in Hamburg, Freiburg and Munich up to a diploma in psychology. His doctorate took place in 1975 on a topic of comparative education. From 1965 he worked at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin with Hellmut Becker and Saul B. Robinsohn . As head of the work area at the German Youth Institute in Munich from 1971, he and his team developed the pedagogical concept of the situation approach - an educational innovation in the field of day-care facilities . It led to the social learning curriculum . The well-known author Donata Elschenbroich was one of the staff .

Jürgen Zimmer was scientific advisor and professor in Münster from 1978 and full professor at the Free University of Berlin from 1980 . In the early 1980s he headed the education department of the Hamburg weekly newspaper Die Zeit . In 1980 he founded the Institute for Intercultural Education and Training in Berlin. He was the founding president of the International Academy for Innovative Education, Psychology and Economics at the Free University of Berlin (INA gGmbH) and 2006-2017 President of the INA with 21 institutes or work areas. In 2018 he founded the International Academy for Social Sciences, Organization and Management - World Citizen Campus - gGmbH (CCW) and became its President.

Jürgen Zimmer researched openings and connections between education and the reality of life. In Thailand the school "School for Life" was founded, which he influenced significantly: In 2003 he co-founded the School for Life Chiang Mai and became president of the School for Life Foundation Thailand. In 2005 he was co-founder and educational director of the Beluga (later Hanseatic) School for Life Phang Nga / Thailand. “The best for the poorest” was his motto. He introduced educational initiatives in many countries, in South America, Africa and Asia. He was visiting professor at the University of São Paulo .

At times he worked for the German UNESCO Commission ; the German Education Council ; the OECD / CERI ; as President of the International Community Education Association (ICEA); the board of trustees of the Hermann-Lietz-Schule Spiekeroog and the High Seas High School; he was director of the International School Berlin-Potsdam and the boarding school Louisenlund ; Director of International Affairs, Rural and Social Management Institute / Bangkok ; Member of the Global Agenda Council of the World Economic Council; President and Member of the Academic Board of the Carl Benz Academy in Beijing; Adviser to the Shaul and Hilde Robinsohn Foundation.

Jürgen Zimmer was married. He died of a stroke on August 21, 2019 in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
