J. Bernlef (actually Hendrik Jan Marsman ; born January 14, 1937 in Sint Pancras ; † October 29, 2012 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch writer who, in his poetry and prose, primarily explored the question, "To what extent subjective and objective experience , Remembering and forgetting, observation and perception can be expressed in language. ”With his novel Hersenschimmen (Hirngespinste) from 1984, which tries to describe the inner world of experience of an Alzheimer's patient , Bernlef also became known in Germany. The novel was made into a film in 1988 and later edited for the stage.

Life

Bernlef was born in 1937 in Sint Pancras, a village north of Alkmaar , in the Netherlands and grew up with a few interruptions in Amsterdam , where he lived until the end of his life. After graduating from high school (1955) he worked in a bookstore and served in the military from 1956 to 1958. During this time, Bernlef's first poems were published in magazines. In 1958 and 1959 he spent long periods of time in Sweden, where he earned his living as a casual laborer, but also began seriously to write. From 1960 to 1964, he worked for a book import company, and since then has worked as a freelance writer and translator. Bernlef translated from Swedish, among others, Lars Gustafsson , Per Olof Sundman and Tomas Tranströmer as well as from the American Elizabeth Bishop and Marianne Moore . In addition to language, Bernlef was also passionate about jazz music - which he has also published several books about. He died in his home town of Amsterdam at the age of 75.
