history
The company's history goes back to the year 1718; At that time, covering materials for wall and ceiling coverings were produced in Hanover under the name “Royal, privileged oilcloth manufacture in front of the stone gate ” (outside the city walls, Am Judenkirchhof ). The plant was relocated to its current location in Vinnhorst in 1898 and the plant was opened in 1901.
The company name goes back to Ernst Phil. Benecke, who took over the business in 1771, and to the cotton fabric calico, which in turn is named after the south Indian city of Kalikut (today: Kozhikode ).
In 1993 the merger with Göppinger Kaliko GmbH took place and with it the connection to the ContiTech Holding. In 2017, Continental AG took over the Hornschuch Group , headquartered in Weißbach, Germany, and more than 1,800 employees at four production sites in Germany and the USA, and integrated it into the Benecke-Hornschuch Surface Group division, which operates under the Continental brand . The company is thus expanding its industrial business and opening up new sales markets, particularly in North America. Since January 1, 2018, the former ContiTech Elastomer Coatings division has been part of the Benecke-Hornschuch Surface Group as a third segment alongside Automotive and Living Solutions. It produces technical fabrics, membranes and printing blankets. Since mid-2019, the business unit has only appeared externally as Continental and internally under the name Surface Solutions.
