history

1871-1990

The Continental-Caoutchouc- and Gutta-Percha Compagnie, today's Continental AG , is founded in Hanover and begins with the production of technical rubber goods and medical articles. Pneumatic bicycle tires and rubber hot water bottles are becoming classics. In 1988 she introduced the ContiTech brand for technical products.

1991-2000

In 1991 the Continental “Technical Products” division is spun off under the ContiTech brand. In 1993, Benecke-Kaliko was integrated into the Continental ContiTech division. Production focuses on artificial leather and foils .

2001-2010

ContiTech takes over the majority of a Chinese manufacturer of air conditioning and power steering hose lines and enters into a joint venture for air spring production with the Korean company Dae Won Kang Up. A plant for drive systems for air conditioning lines is being built in Romania, and a plant for air suspension systems is being built in Turkey. The Benecke Changshun Auto Trim joint venture opens a plant for automotive surface materials in Zhangjiagang, China .

The previous ContiTech Holding GmbH has been operating as ContiTech AG since 2004. In the same year she takes over Phoenix AG . The merger of ContiTech and Phoenix creates the world's largest manufacturer of rubber and plastic products outside of the tire industry.

In 2007 ContiTech acquired the British hose manufacturer Thermopol with locations in Great Britain, the USA, Romania and Korea, as well as the Danish drive belt manufacturer Roulunds with locations in Europe and Asia as well as the Serbian conveyor belt company Univerzal Kolubara and a conveyor belt plant from Metso Minerals in Moers . An engine bearing plant and a plant for surface materials open in San Luis Potosí , Mexico . A production facility for textile and steel cord conveyor belts is being built in Ponta Grossa, Brazil, and a plant for hoses, cables, vibration technology and air springs in Changshu, China .

In 2007 ContiTech shares are traded for the first time on the stock exchanges in Hamburg and Hanover .

Ltd. in Tianjin , China , the Australian trading company MIRS in Perth , the British steep-angle conveyor belt manufacturer Specialized Belting Supplies in Thetford , the conveyor belt manufacturer Legg Company Inc. in Halstead, Kansas, and the industrial conveyor belt division of the Finnish Metso Corporation as well as the brake molded parts business of Freudenberg Sealing Technologies with three locations in Germany, France and Mexico. In addition, ContiTech is acquiring the air conditioning line business from Parker Hannifin with plants in the USA, Mexico, the Czech Republic and South Korea.

ContiTech opens a new mixing plant in Nyíregyháza, Hungary, a research and development center for bearing and vibration technology in Changshu, China, a hose line plant in Subotica, Serbia, a plant for air conditioning and servo lines in Kaluga, Russia, and is building a hose plant for oil production and gas extraction in Brazilian macae. The company is strengthening its plastics expertise by purchasing Inotec Innovative Technologie GmbH in Kohren-Sahlis and Präzisionstechnik Geithain GmbH in Geithain, opening an air conditioning pipeline plant in Hangzhou, China, and establishing a joint venture with the Chinese partner company Jiangsu Changshun Group Co. Ltd. to build a second Chinese plant for automotive finishing materials in Changzhou.

Since 2013, ContiTech's expansion strategy has been geared towards continuously reducing the company's dependence on the OEM business in the automotive industry. In 2015 ContiTech bought the American competitor Veyance. The Ohio company complements ContiTech in previously underrepresented markets (e.g. USA and South America). ContiTech is also taking over two plants for surface materials from the Belgian Mecaseat Group in Pamplona, Spain, and Wagrowiec, Poland. With the start of a production facility for rubber compounds in Changshu, China, ContiTech now also has its first compounding center for general applications other than tires and conveyor belts outside Europe.
