J. Herschel is a large whale plain on the northern edge of Mare Frigoris in the northwest of the moon front . In the northwest lies the little pronounced Anaximander crater and the conspicuous Carpenter . To the south of the whale plain lie the small Horrebow and Robinson craters .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the British astronomer Sir John Herschel .
