J. Michael Duncan

James Michael Duncan (* 2. January 1937 ), cited as J. Michael Duncan or JM Duncan is an American civil engineer for geotechnical engineering .

Duncan graduated from Georgia Tech (bachelor's degree in 1959, master's degree in 1962) and received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1965 . In 1962 he was at the Waterways Experimentation Station of the US Army Corps of Engineers in Vicksburg (Mississippi) . From 1965 he taught first as an assistant professor in Berkeley, where he became a professor in 1973 and headed the geotechnical department for several years. He was Professor (Thomas W. Rice Professor of Civil Engineering) at Virginia Tech since 1984 , from 1987 as Distinguished University Professor. He has been Distinguished Professor Emeritus since 2007. From 1984 to 1993 he headed the geotechnical department and was director of the Center for Geotechnical Practice and Research. In 1971/72 he was at the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute in Oslo.

Among other things, he dealt with the shear strength of soils, slope stability (he wrote the new edition of the US Army Corps of Engineers Handbook), groundwater flow, pile and shallow foundations, subsidence, dam construction, analysis of geotechnical issues with finite elements , and he also used several geotechnical computer programs developed.

After Hurricane Katrina , he investigated the cause of the failure of the levees in New Orleans as one of the leaders of the official geotechnical investigation group. For this he was awarded the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal of the Department of the Army in 2007 (the US Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for the supervision of the levees on the Mississippi). Since 1965 he has been an independent geotechnical consultant with projects outside the USA, for example in Japan, Indonesia, South America, New Zealand, Europe and the Middle East. Since 1986 he has been in the geotechnical advisory group for the Panama Canal .

Duncan received many awards and was for example Terzaghi Lecturer (Limitations of conventional analysis of consolidation settlement) in 1991 and received the Terzaghi Award in 2003 . He has also received the Middlebrooks Award, the Huber Research Prize, the Collingwood Prize (1972) and the H. Bolton Seed Medal three times from the ASCE , of which he has been an honorary member since 1999. He is an honorary member of the Japanese Geotechnical Society (2008) and a member of the National Academy of Engineering (1985).
