John Robert Booker (* 24 July 1942 in Sydney , † 13. January 1998 ) was an Australian civil engineer of geotechnics .

Booker studied civil engineering and mathematics at the University of Sydney from 1960 , where he received his doctorate in civil engineering under Ted Davis. He then became a reader and, in 1985, professor of engineering mechanics in Sydney. From 1989 to 1994 he headed the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Mining there. From 1990 he was Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. He was visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley (Senior Fulbright Fellowship), Cambridge University , Kings College London and the University of Western Ontario .

Booker published around 250 scientific articles. His focus was on the analytical treatment of geotechnical problems. Among other things, he dealt with the interaction of structures with the soil, creep settlements, consolidation , the application of plasticity theory to load-bearing problems, thermomechanical behavior of soils and rocks and the transport of pollutants in the groundwater.

He was a regular consultant at the Australian engineering company Coffey Partners International. He was a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers in Australia. In 1997 he became Officer of the Order of Australia and in 1995 a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Sciences. He received the 1994 Medal for Distinguished Contributions in Geomechanics from the International Association of Computer Methods and Advances in Geomechanics and gave the EH Davis Memorial Lecture of the Australian Geomechanics Society in 1995.

He was supposed to give the Rankine Lecture in 1999 , but died before that. In 1983 he received a PhD from the University of Sydney for his work in geomechanics.

He was married and had two daughters.

The IACMAG (International Association for Computer Methods and Advances in Geomechanics) awards the John Booker Excellence Medal in his honor .
