J. Robert Dorfman

Jay Robert Dorfman (born May 20, 1937 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) is an American theoretical physicist who works in the field of statistical mechanics .

Life

Dorfman studied at Johns Hopkins University , where he obtained his bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1957 and received his PhD in 1961 with a thesis on statistical mechanics of non-equilibrium Theories of Linear Response for Transport Coefficients . He then went to Rockefeller University in New York City as a post-doctoral student for three years , where he worked with Theodore H. Berlin and EGD Cohen and published a number of much-cited articles with Cohen. In 1964 he moved to the University of Maryland in College Park. There he was initially an assistant professor, in 1972 he became a full professor . He held various administrative functions at the University of Maryland, including director of the Institute for Physical Science and Technology from 1983 to 1992.

Dorfman's main areas of work were the application of statistical mechanics methods for non-equilibrium (e.g. the Boltzmann equation ) to calculate the transport properties of classical model systems in two and three dimensions (including the model of hard disks and model of hard spheres ) for different Particle density and the application of concepts from the theory of dynamic systems , as they are known from chaos research and the theory of fractals , to transport phenomena in fluids in a non-equilibrium state. In 1977 Dorfman became a Fellow of the American Physical Society . In 2002 he was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science .
