Jaak Sooäär

Jaak Sooäär (born April 25, 1972 in Tallinn , Estonian SSR ) is an Estonian jazz guitarist .

Live and act

As a child, Sooäär sang in the Estonian Boys Choir, with which he was touring the USSR on concert tours . He studied at the Music College in Tallinn and at the Rytmisk Music Conservatory in Copenhagen. From 1989 he began to work in the Estonian jazz and pop scene.

In 1999 he toured with the European Jazz Youth Orchestra, in 2003 he played in the EBU Big Band. In the same year there was a recording of a concert at the Jumo Jazz Club in Helsinki ( Spring Odysse ) in which Sooäär played with Mikko Innanen and Han Bennink . In 2006 Sooäär appeared as a guest soloist with the WDR Big Band . In 2007 he recorded a duo album with the harpist and singer Tuule Kann. He has also worked with international musicians such as Ray Anderson , Conny Bauer , Raoul Björkenheim , Eric Brochard , Gavin Bryars , Kent Carter , Will Calhoun , Pierre Dørge , Anders Jormin , Dave Kikoski , Joëlle Léandre , Joe Lovano , Ramón López , Ron McClure , Karlheinz Miklin , John Schröder , Harri Sjöström and Petras Vyšniauskas . In 2011 he also performed in Austria with Alexey Kruglow . In total, he has recorded more than twenty albums.

He has been teaching guitar in the jazz department of the Estonian Academy of Music and Drama since 2001. Since 2004 he has been its director.

Prizes and awards

In 2001 he received first prize in the Desert Time project run with Daniel Erdmann at the international Peer Gynt improvisation competition in Pärnu . With his band Eesti Keeled , he received the Estonian music award for "best ethno / folk artist" in both 2003 and 2005; In 2007 Sooäär was the first jazz musician to be awarded the new Estonian jazz prize. In the same year he also received the annual prize of the Estonian Cultural Foundation ( Eesti Kultuurkapital ).
