Jaakow Dori ( Hebrew יעקב דורי; * 1899 in Odessa , Russia as Ya'akov Dostrovsky ; † January 22, 1973 in Haifa ) was the first chief of staff of the Israeli armed forces .

Dori was born in Russia, but his family emigrated to Palestine in 1905 after anti-Semitic pogroms in Odessa .

After graduating from high school in Haifa, he was in the First World War, a member of the Jewish Legion in the British Army . He later joined the Hagana and took the cover name "Dan".

In 1939 Dori was appointed Chief of Staff of the Hagana, a post he held until 1946. From 1946 to 1947 he was head of a Jewish delegation from Palestine which was supposed to procure weapons in the USA .

When the Zahal was founded, Dori became its first chief of staff. Despite his leadership skills and organizational talent, he had problems in command of his troops due to an illness in the Israeli War of Independence , which is why he had to hand over far-reaching management tasks to his deputy Jigael Jadin .

On November 9, 1949, he ended his tenure as chief of staff and thus his military career. He was succeeded by his deputy Jadin.

After leaving the Zahal, Dori was appointed chairman of the Science Council belonging to the Prime Minister's office. He later became President of the Technion in Haifa (Technical University). He held this position until 1965.
