Jaan Valsiner (born June 29, 1951 in Tallinn ) is an American psychologist of Estonian descent, 2017 winner of the Hans Kilian Prize , foreign member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences .

Life

From 1969 to 1971 Jaan Valsiner studied English at the Tallinn Pedagogical Institute . He then continued his studies at the Psychological Faculty of the University of Tartu in the field of psycholinguistics and communication. In 1976 he defended his thesis on the relationships between physiological, cognitive and interactive factors in early human ontogeny .

He completed his postgraduate studies in 1979 with the defense of a doctoral thesis on the subject of mechanisms for recognizing faces and facial expressions .

After graduating from Tartu State University in 1976, he moved to the Department of Psychology. From April to October 1980 he was visiting professor and assistant professor at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen , from 1980 to 1981 at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis . From 1981 to 1997 he was a professor at the Department of Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . From 1997 he worked as a professor of psychology at Clark University in Worcester , Massachusetts . Since 2013 he has been Professor of Cultural Psychology at Aalborg University in Denmark.

At the beginning of his scientific work he dealt with developmental psychology and mainly with the analysis of mother-child communication patterns. Today he focuses more on the cultural organization and cultural psychology of human lifelong cognitive and affective processes. He has worked on the history of psychology and the methodology of psychology . He is also interested in the relationships between psychology and semiotics .

Valsiner has been a US citizen since 1988. He was a professor of psychology at Clark University . Since 2013 he has been working at Aalborg University in Denmark .

Valsiner was awarded an honorary doctorate from Tallinn University on February 22, 2008.
