Jack Dempsey , called The Nonpareil , actually John Edward Kelly (born December 15, 1862 in Curran in County Kildare , Ireland , † November 2, 1895 in Portland , Oregon ) was an Irish middleweight boxing champion .
After a belated obituary for him appeared in the Seattle Daily Times in May 1909 , he became very popular again after his death. John L. Sullivan wanted to have a monument placed on his grave, but the family refused.
In his honor, the later world heavyweight champion, born William Harrison Dempsey , took the first name Jack and called himself Jack Dempsey .
He stood against many well-known boxers in the ring, often against heavyweights, for example: James J. Corbett , Bob Fitzsimmons and also John L. Sullivan.
