Jack Semple (* 1957 in Regina , Canada ) is a Canadian blues musician . The multi-award-winning guitarist became known nationwide through numerous live performances and album releases as well as works for Canadian television.

Life

Semple grew up as a farmer's son with five siblings on a farm north of the district town of Regina in Saskatchewan . In his youth he played guitar in several local bands in the city before moving to Toronto for a career in the late 1980s . He became the lead guitarist of the then popular The Lincoln, who played funk and rhythm and blues . After about two years with the band, Semple decided to start a solo career and return to Saskatchewan. He also wanted to take more care of his newly founded family.

From 1991 he began to publish albums with his own song material. The first was the concert recording Live from Formerly's . In 1992 he won the MuchMusic "Guitar Wars" competition. Three studio albums followed in the 1990s and another live album in 2001, Live at Kaos .

The album with the French-language title Qu'appelle ("was calling") from 2004 brought him the 2005 Western Canadian Music Award for 'outstanding instrumental recording'. In 2006 he released two albums, Cool Yule and Tribute to Lightfoot .

He was featured on the weekly national radio show Saturday Night Blues as well as on the two best-of albums Saturday Night Blues (CBC, 1991) and Saturday Night Blues: 20 Years (CBC, 2006). The popular CBC radio show consists of a mix of traditional blues from the Petersen Vaults , concert recordings, interviews and new releases. In between, Semple also played the title role in the television film Guitarman from 1994. In 1999 and 2000 he was nominated for a Gemini Award for his soundtrack to the television series Incredible Story Studio .

Semple has been Music Director of the Saskatchewan Pavilion since 2009. In 2011 he was one of the big names at the PEI Jazz and Blues Festival in Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island , which is also the smallest Canadian province.
