Life and private life

Jackson Galaxy was born Richard Kirschner in the New York borough of Manhattan and grew up on the Upper West Side . In his autobiography Cat Daddy: What the World's Most Incorrigible Cat Taught Me About Life, Love, and Coming Clean , published in 2012, he mentions that his father was born in Hungary and that the family is of Jewish and Roma origin. The father emigrated to the USA and, without speaking a word of English, set up his own small business there.

Galaxy started playing guitar at the age of ten, and her first appearances with bands followed as a teenager. At this time he also began to write his first songs. After high school, Galaxy studied acting at the University of Iowa , graduating in 1991.

He officially changed his name to Jackson Galaxy in his twenties. On June 29, 2014, he married animal rights activist Minoo Rahbar at the Best Friends Animal Society shelter in Kanab, Utah . The couple's dog, Mooshka, wore the wedding rings during the ceremony. Galaxy has been vegan since 2014, which is partly due to weight problems. For this reason, in 2007 he had already undergone a stomach reduction and reduced his weight from around 180 kilos to around 110 kilos.

Act

Galaxy moved to Boulder , Colorado in 1992 and focused on his career as a rock musician; Among other things, he played in the band Pope of the Circus Gods . He lived off odd jobs for a long time until he got a job at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley Animal Shelter. During this time he began to study the behavior of the rescued cats intensively, because he found that less anxious cats are more easily adopted. In 2002, after his release from employment, he started his own business as a behavioral therapist for cats. Because he lacked university certificates, he initially hesitated to call himself a behavior therapist, which is why he initially preferred the term consultant. In the same year he founded together with Dr. Jean Hofve, a holistic veterinarian, the company Little Big Cat, Inc. In addition to joint consulting work, they developed a range of herbal remedies for animals under the name Spirit Essence , which addressed the problems of separation anxiety, asthma and travel stress.

After 15 years in Boulder, Galaxy moved to Los Angeles in 2007, where he continued his consulting work. He visits cat owners in their houses and apartments to get an idea of their cats' behavior problems. He works closely with animal shelters and rescue organizations by teaching volunteers, staff and future cat owners his "cat mojo" approach, which describes the confident behavior of cats in their environment. He also advises them on improving the living environment for indoor cats with behavioral problems.

He serves on the boards of the Stray Cat Alliance and Fix Nation in Los Angeles and an advisor to Neighborhood Cats in New York City. He founded the Jackson Galaxy Foundation, which was later renamed the Jackson Galaxy Project and is now part of GreaterGood.org . Under this trademark, he controls various animal welfare initiatives such as the Cat Pawsitive Program , which offers behavioral training for cats in animal shelters, and Operation Homeward Bound , through which kittens from overcrowded rescue centers in Los Angeles are referred to partner organizations in other states - in California, killing is still more captive Wildlife common and is carried out regularly - as well as Safe Haven , which equips women's shelters in an animal-friendly manner and helps women who live in violent partnerships. Often the compulsion to leave the pet behind is a reason not to seek a way out of such partnerships.
