Jacob Friedrich Werner

Jacob Friedrich Werner (born September 15, 1732 in Königsberg (Prussia) ; † April 21, 1782 there ) was a German rhetorician and historian .

Life

The son of the court secretary and councilor Heinrich Werner († January 18, 1737) and his wife Gertrud Dorothea (* December 3, 1706; † August 1, 1793), daughter of the Königsberg professor Christian Sahme , had already lost his father in their early childhood. Since his mother then remarried to the Königsberg professor of rhetoric and history Christian Heinrich Gütther (1696–1755), he is likely to have grown up in an extremely stimulating home.

It was deposited at the University of Königsberg at the age of twelve on August 24, 1744 . Here he had also started his studies and on May 15, 1753 acquired the academic degree of Master of Philosophy. In 1754 he became an associate professor at the philosophical faculty of the Königsberg University and in 1755 a full professor of rhetoric and history. In 1755 he was also the caretaker of the Wallenrodische Bibliothek for one year and director of the former free society in Königsberg for seven years. In addition, he participated in the organizational tasks of the Königsberg University and was rector of the Alma Mater in the summer semester of 1778 .

In 1756 he married Luise Henriette (* January 27, 1730; † February 24, 1804), daughter of Commerce Councilor David Heinrich Pietsch. She was a niece of the Königsberg professor of poetry Johann Valentin Pietsch . The marriage had three children. We know Jakob Heinrich Werner (* 1758; † young), Friedericke Dorothea Luise Werner (* 1761; † young) and the poet Friedrich Ludwig Zacharias Werner .
