Johannes Gallandi

Johannes Jakob Theophil Benjamin Gallandi (born June 15, 1843 in Paterswalde , Wehlau district ; † December 31, 1917 in Königsberg i. Pr. ) Was a German officer in the Prussian army. He became known as a genealogist of the East Prussian nobility and as a chronicler of the Crown Prince Grenadier Regiment.

Life

Gallandi came from an old East Prussian farming family. He was born on June 15, 1843 as the son of the Pastor Johann Otto Gallandi (* May 2, 1808 in Tapiau , East Prussia; † May 5, 1852 in Paterswalde) and the pastor's daughter Luise Wilhelmine Auguste Koehler (* July 10, 1802 in Kremitten ; † May 20, 1885 in Königsberg). He attended the Friedrichskolleg in Königsberg and, after graduating from university entrance examination, entered the grenadier regiment "Kronprinz" (1st East Prussian) No. 1 in Königsberg on September 20, 1861 , where he was an officer from November 11, 1862 to 1886 served. With this he took part in the German War and the Franco-German War . From December 15, 1866 to November 25, 1870, he was adjutant of the 1st Battalion , and from March 7, 1872 to October 10, 1873, regimental adjutant. On February 11, 1875 he became captain à la suite of the regiment and company commander at the NCO School in Jülich , and on October 1, 1879 at the NCO School in Marienwerder . Since September 13, 1882 he was chief of the 10th Company in Grenadier Regiment "Kronprinz" (1st East Prussian) No. 1. On March 16, 1886 he became an aggregated major and battalion commander in the 8th East Prussian Infantry Regiment No. 45 in Lyck , on January 13, 1887 in the Grenadier Regiment "Crown Prince". On August 11th he became battalion commander in the infantry regiment “King Ludwig III. von Bayern ”(2nd Lower Silesian) No. 47 in Posen . After his departure on February 16, 1889, he moved back to Königsberg. On May 17, 1892, he was given temporary retirement. On September 12, 1894, he was chargierter lieutenant colonel .

During his active service, Gallandi dealt with the history of his regiment, as well as the East Prussian nobility and their coats of arms. He published only a few books and a few magazine articles during his lifetime. He bequeathed his, in some cases almost complete, ranks of the East and West Prussian nobility, as well as his coat of arms collection, to the Royal State Archives in Königsberg . Today his estate is kept in the Secret State Archive of Prussian Cultural Heritage in Berlin. From his fortune, he founded the Gallandi-Koehler Family Foundation , which paid young, needy family members training grants. Gallandi remained unmarried.
