Jacob Hibshman

Jacob Hibshman (born January 31, 1772 in Ephrata , Province of Pennsylvania , †  May 19, 1852 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1819 and 1821 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jacob Hibshman attended public schools in his home country and a private school in Harrisburg . After that, he initially worked in agriculture. Between 1810 and 1819 he was an associate judge in Lancaster County . Politically, he joined the Democratic Republican Party . In the congressional election of 1818 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded John Whiteside on March 4, 1819 . Since he was not confirmed in 1820, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1821 .

After serving in the US House of Representatives, Jacob Hibshman held various local offices. For example, he served as Chairman of the Board of Canal Appraisers . He was a major general in the Pennsylvania State Militia for twelve years. In 1844 he founded Northern Mutual Insurance Co and became its first president. He died on May 19, 1852 on his estate near Ephrata.
