Jacobus Maestertius

Jacobus Maestertius (* 1610 in Dendermonde ; † April 5, 1658 in Leiden ) was a Belgian lawyer .

Life

Maestertius came from an originally English family called Masterson or Maisterton. His father Adam had sent him to Paris, where he was staying with a relative on his mother's side named Johannes van der Neesen. He then began his legal studies at the University of Leuven with Valerius Andreas (1588–1655). Under this 1630 he defended the treatise de Utroque retractu gentilitio et conventionali en de Liberis praeteritis vel exheredatis . He then traveled back to France, where he continued his studies at the University of Orléans . Another educational journey took him via England to Italy, until he finally came to the University of Leiden , where he enrolled on March 23, 1634.

That same year he became a Doctor of Laws PhD . From 1635 he gave lectures on feudal law (Jus feudale), on October 23, 1637 he was appointed associate professor of feudal law. After he had received a teaching post for civil law on February 10, 1639, he was appointed full professor of law on June 16, 1639. As such, he taught from 1640 and from 1654 he was appointed to teach the Digest. In 1653/54 he was rector of the Alma Mater .
