Jacopo Filiasi

Jacopo Filiasi (* 1750 in Venice ; † February 17, 1829 there) was a Venetian scholar who dealt with historiography, natural sciences, archeology.

Life

Jacopo Filiasi was born into a wealthy family from Padua . After the death of his father Antonio, his mother, Maria de Bassanesi from Mantua , placed him in the hands of Abbot Benedetto Canossa from Lucca for teaching and, after a long stay in Mantua, Abbot Placido Bordoni, who promoted his wish to acquire universalistic knowledge. Since he was financially secure, he had the means and opportunity to expand his knowledge beyond the framework of the history of Venice and to deal with physics , hydraulics , botany , but also astronomy , meteorology or archeology . In 1787 he entered the Academy of Mantua , later those of Zara and Padua, and was admitted to the University of Venice. He corresponded with writers and historians from all parts of Italy.

Conte of the Republic of Venice and at the time of Napoleon Chevalier des Ordre de la Couronne de Fer ( Order of the Iron Crown ), he survived the political changes without damage. He became an elector in the Napoleonic Collegio dei dotti , member of the board of directors of the Liceo veneziano and the cathedral factory of St. Mark's Basilica. Together with Leopoldo Cicognara and Antonio Diedo he was responsible for the large-scale robbery of monuments and works of art that were scattered in the dissolved churches and monasteries; with Giovanni Bonicelli and Iacopo Morelli , the librarian of the Biblioteca Marciana , in 1815 he compiled the catalog of Italian books that were banned in the states of Austria. From 1815 he was responsible for the supervision and implementation of the Napoleonic project to repair the sea walls of Malamocco with AL de Romano, P. Arctico, FM Franceschinis and I. Cicuto. From 1818 to 1827 he was general director of the high schools of the Veneto provinces.

But most of the time he devoted to his historical studies of the Venice lagoon . His most extensive works are the Memorie storiche de 'Veneti primi e secondi .
