Jacqueline Berenstein-Wavre

Jacqueline Berenstein-Wavre (born December 26, 1921 in Merkwiller-Pechelbronn ( Alsace ); resident in Neuchâtel and Geneva ) is a Swiss teacher , councilor and women's rights activist from the canton of Geneva .

Life

Jacqueline Berenstein-Wavre is the daughter of Robert Wavre, engineer , and Esther de Montmollin. In 1970 she married Alexandre Berenstein. Berenstein grew up with her grandparents in Merkwiller-Pechelbronn. She attended the School of Social Work and studied economics and social sciences in Geneva. She taught at various schools, where she introduced career counseling in particular . She sat from 1963 to 1973 as a representative of the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland (SP) on the municipal council of Geneva. She was the first woman to hold its presidium from 1968 to 1969. From 1973 to 1989 she was a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Geneva. As President of the Federation of Swiss Women's Organizations from 1975 to 1980 and of the Fondation du Collège du Travail , she endeavored to maintain the political consciousness of the workforce and to upgrade housework . She was one of the initiators of the constitutional article on equality between men and women, adopted in 1981, and an active member in peace organizations . From 1965 she was on the editorial board of the monthly magazine Femmes Suisses .
