Jacques-René Tenon (born February 21, 1724 in Joigny , † January 16, 1816 in Paris ) was a French surgeon , anatomist and pathologist .

Life

Tenon was born into a family of surgeons in 1724, the oldest of eleven children. From 1741 he studied human medicine with the anatomist Jacob Winslow in Paris. In 1748 he took part in the Flanders campaign of the French troops during the War of the Austrian Succession and was able to expand his knowledge considerably there. Back in Paris he became a general surgeon at the Hôpital de la Salpêtrière . In 1759 he became a member of the Académie des Sciences . Germain Pichault de La Martinière later appointed him to the chair of pathology at the Collège de Chirurgie. Tenon built a small hospital and was also able to research new therapies there. In 1788 Tenon published his work Mémoire sur les hôpitaux de Paris , which called for a reform of the accommodation of sick people in Paris hospitals.

In 1791, after the French Revolution, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly and became Chairman of the Public Security Committee. In the same year he also chaired a commission for the Paris hospitals. Despite his commitment, he was not re-elected because he disapproved of the excesses of the revolution. In 1792 he retired. In 1806 Tenon first described Tenon 's capsule of the eye . He died in 1816. He was buried in the Père Lachaise cemetery.
