Jacques Antoine Charles Bresse (born October 9, 1822 in Vienne , † May 22, 1883 in Paris ) was a French engineer and mathematician .

Bresse studied at the École polytechnique and the École nationale des ponts et chaussées and was first Corps des ingénieurs des ponts et chaussées , then repetent of mechanics at the École des Ponts et Chaussées and geodesy at the École polytechnique (APC 1851). At the École des Ponts et Chaussées he was assistant to Jean-Baptiste-Charles-Joseph Bélanger and from 1853 his successor. In 1871 he became professor of mechanics at the École Polytechnique and in 1874 at the École des Ponts et Chaussées in Paris. From 1880 he was a member of the Paris Academy .

His elastic theory of masonry arches (1854) was a significant advance over that of Navier and placed him in this area alongside Emil Winkler in Germany in the 19th century . His textbook on applied mechanics was published several times.

In recognition of his achievements, he was ranked 5th among the 72 names on the Eiffel Tower .
