List of 72 names on the Eiffel Tower
In recognition of their scientific and technical achievements, Gustave Eiffel had the surnames of 72 male people - all French except for the Swiss Breguet and Sturm and the native Italian Lagrange - written in gold on the friezes on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower . At the beginning of the 20th century they were painted over and only reappeared during the restoration of the Eiffel Tower between 1986 and 1987 by the Société nouvelle d'exploitation de la tour Eiffel (SNTE).
With the exception of Fizeau and Chevreul, all scientists had died by the time the tower was inaugurated.
