Ernest Goüin
Ernest Goüin (born July 22, 1815 in Tours , † March 24, 1885 in Paris ) was a French mechanical and civil engineer and entrepreneur.
Goüin came from a distinguished Touraine family (his ancestors were bankers and businessmen). His father had a spinning mill in Nantes . He studied at the École polytechnique in 1836 . After that, his family sent him to England to study industry. Soon afterwards he was sent by the Paris-Orleans railway company to Manchester, where they had ordered locomotives. He then worked as an engineer with the Paris-Saint Germain railway company. In 1846 he founded his own company Ernest Gouin et Cie in Batignolles in the north of Paris, where he manufactured locomotives and spinning machines. Soon the iron bridge construction was added and in 1867 his company became the Société de Construction des Batignolles (today Spie Batignolles ).
His bridges include the Asnières railway bridge from 1852, the first large iron bridge in France, an iron bridge over the Scorff near Lorient , an iron bridge that still exists today in the Rue du Rocher in Paris (1868), the Culoz viaduct , the bridge from Mâcon , Moissac and von Langon , the Margaret Bridge over the Danube in Budapest . In addition, his company built numerous other bridges and railway projects in Algeria, Australia, Spain, Romania, Russia, the Netherlands, Italy and Hungary.
He is one of the 72 names on the Eiffel Tower and a street in Paris is named after him.
At times he was President of the Paris Chamber of Commerce. He was the commander of the Legion of Honor.
Ernest was the father of Jules Goüin, who in 1905 acquired the Royaumont Monastery , a former Cistercian abbey . In 1937 Jules' grandson Henri and his wife Isabelle converted it into a well-known cultural center, a meeting place for artists. a. became famous through concerts and international colloquiums and is still in operation today.
