Despite this failure, he was part of the squad for the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, Japan . In addition to ski jumping, he also competed in Nordic combined for the first time . If he only reached 51st place in ski jumping on the large hill, he landed 35th place in the Gundersen individual combination.
In the Four Hills Tournament 1972/73 Gaillard could only improve slightly and was 92nd overall. The best individual result was 87th place in Oberstdorf. He experienced a further increase in performance at the Four Hills Tournament 1973/74 , before he finished his best Four Hills Tournament 1974/75 as 56th. The best result was the 47th place in Oberstdorf. He finished his last Four Hills Tournament in 1975/76 as 79th.
His last international tournament was the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck . Here Gaillard only started in the Nordic combined and reached 25th place in the individual.
Since the end of his active career, Gaillard has been working as a ski jumping trainer since 1978 and currently looks after the French ski jumping women.
